Roeland Jansen

Roeland Jansen’s career in international education began approximately ten years ago while he was completing his PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University in Shanghai. He subsequently pursued a PGCE to further develop his classroom skills and became a licensed educator. During his time in Shanghai, he taught Chemistry (A-levels and AP) as well as Common Core Science for around six years before returning to Holland to join a college as a lecturer and researcher. Joining SIS represents a return to Asia for him, and he is enthusiastic about this new chapter.

He majored in Analytical and Physical Chemistry during his MSc and worked as an engineer for the US EPA for several years prior to relocating to Shanghai.

What he enjoys most about teaching high school science, particularly Chemistry, is the opportunity to transfer skills and knowledge, spark curiosity, and support students in gradually developing into capable scientific investigators with a strong foundational understanding. He is particularly inspired by Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) theory, which emphasizes the importance of social interaction in cognitive development.

On a personal note, he is married to Annie, who is from Shanghai. In his spare time, he enjoys watching documentaries and sports, as well as exploring his surroundings for good local food and coffee.
